Call for Abstracts

Submission Details

1. Notes from the Program Chair

   There will only be one call for papers that requires a final, complete abstract be submitted by Thursday, November 10, 2016. NO subsequent changes to the abstract will be allowed. Please note that ONLY submissions that include BOTH the long and short versions of the abstract, PROPERLY FORMATTED, will be considered. Abstracts will be scored blinded based on the significance of the findings, originality, scientific quality and general interest. Case reports will be reviewed based on novelty, practical interest, and completeness.
   
   

2. Deadline

   Abstract deadline: Thursday, November 10, 2016. Abstracts with complete data and statistical analysis, if applicable, must be received by this date.

3. Submission Requirements

   
   PLEASE READ COMPLETELY BEFORE PREPARING AND SUBMITTING ABSTRACTS
   
   

   Submission requires the following information:

   • Category - Clinical Research, Basic Science Research, or Case Report/Series
     Clinical Research is patient oriented research. This includes using clinical patients or their tissues to study mechanisms of disease, interventions, complications, or epidemiological research.
     Basic Science Research is research into the mechanisms or treatment of disease using models (i.e. disease induction, biomechanical testing, etc).
     Case Report/Series is a single case or cases where the epidemiology, disease mechanism, or novel treatment is described along with outcome.
     
     
   • Session - Choose the most appropriate session from the list of themes. VOS may reallocate the presentation depending upon the number and nature of submissions.
     
     
   • Species - Large animal, small animal, or exotic.
     
     
   • Title: Should accurately reflect what was done. Please use Title Case.
     
     
   • Presentation preference (podium, poster, either). All those submitting for podium preference will also be considered for poster, but preference will be given to the podium presentation. Those who choose poster will not be considered for podium presentation.
     
     
   • Author - Author affiliation and contact information. Try to make affiliations as coordinated as possible, rather than having a different affiliation for each author at the same institution. Please add all co-authors and co-workers to avoid reviewer conflict of interest.
     
     
   • Disclosure - Acknowledgement section for funding source or any conflicts of interest.
     
     
   • Two abstracts - a short abstract for publication and a long abstract for the review process.
     
     
     • SHORT abstract: This abstract will be used for publication in VCOT and the Conference Proceedings and is limited to 250 words in Arial or Times-New Roman 12 pt formatting.This is the published abstract, so please ensure care with your language and grammar - despite the word limit.
     
     
     
     • LONG abstract: The abstract length is limited to 800 words (excluding references, tables and figures). Single space between paragraphs, using Times New Roman or Arial 12 pt font. Do NOT include authors� names or affiliations in this abstract to maintain anonymity during the review process. VOS is not responsible if affiliations are included in this abstract. Pictures, tables, and figures are allowed.
     
     
     
     You should receive an email message within 24 hours of submission, confirming that submission materials were received, readable, and correctly formatted.

4. Abstract Headings: Clinical Research / Basic Science Research

   The following headings are required for submission of Clinical Research and Basic Science Research Studies abstracts (for both long and short abstracts). Headings are not required for Case reports/Series, but proprietary or conflict of interest statement is still required.
   
   

   • INTRODUCTION: Background on general topic or previous work; include statement of purpose of the study and hypothesis. This should convey the need, significance/impact of the work.
     
     
   • MATERIALS & METHODS: Briefly describe the methodology of research or technique used in this study. Methods should be appropriate to answer the hypothesis or problem that generated the work.
     
     
   • RESULTS: Data should be presented in sufficient detail to support the conclusions. It is not acceptable to generalize or state, "results will be discussed".
     
     
   • DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Include an interpretation of the results. Do not simply restate the results. Was the hypothesis/problem answered? Were limitations or additional problems identified? How can the information derived from this study, or technique, best be applied to further research or clinical situation? Provide relevance and/or innovation to the current body of knowledge.
     
     
   • REFERENCES: A limited number (e.g. five) of references are allowed, if necessary, in the long abstract.
     
     
   • ACKNOWLEDGMENT: Disclose any proprietary interest and identify financial support, either by direct funding (extramural or intramural) or materials. This MUST be provided in both the short and long abstracts for the abstracts to be considered complete. If there is no funding, you must still make a statement like "There was no proprietary interest or funding provided for this project."

5. Humane Care and Use of Animals

   
   Authors are required to certify that the study submitted was conducted in a manner consistent with the U.S. National Institutes of Health "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals" (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/olaw.htm), the Animal Welfare Acts (US PL 89-544;91-579;94-279), and the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Agricultural Research and Teaching (http://www.fass.org/page.asp?pageID=216), including appropriate methods of euthanasia (American Veterinary Medical Association Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals; http://grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/olaw.htm) Regulations governing experimental animal use in some countries are more stringent than those in the US, and where this is the case, authors from those countries are cautioned to ensure that their studies meet the requirements of the country in which the study was conducted. For all other countries, the minimum standard for abstract consideration is compliance with US regulations. Inappropriate experimental use of animals or inadequate anesthesia and analgesia, including postoperative analgesia, will preclude further consideration.
