Call for Abstracts

4th World Veterinary Orthopedic Congress (March 1-8, 2014)

We invite practitioners, academicians, and researchers interested in large animal, small animal, and exotic species, to submit abstracts of novel studies in practical and scientific topics related to veterinary orthopedics and traumatology. Papers addressing results of controlled retrospective and prospective clinical studies are strongly encouraged. Clinician investigators should also consider submitting innovative surgical techniques, or case (series) reports describing unusual or difficult cases as these will be reviewed separate from the scientific abstracts and incorporated into the annual meeting. In addition to the typical scientific abstract sessions, the 2014 WVOC will feature a new session called "Challenges in revision surgery". Presentations will be limited to 10 minutes and followed by 5 minutes of discussion.

Submission Details

  1. Notes from the Program Chair

There will only be one Call for Abstracts that requires a final, complete abstract be submitted by November 1, 2013. NO subsequent changes to the abstract will be allowed. Please note that ONLY submissions that include BOTH the long and short versions of the abstract, PROPERLY FORMATTED, will be considered. Only a long abstract will be required for the special submission "Challenges in revision surgery". Abstracts will be scored blinded based on the significance of the findings, originality, scientific quality and general interest. Case reports will be reviewed based on novelty, practical interest, and completeness. Case reports submitted to "Challenges in revision surgery" will be reviewed based on case difficulty, creativity in revision plan, soundness of orthopedic principles displayed, appropriate follow-up and teaching value of the case.

The Mark S. Bloomberg Memorial RESIDENT Research Award sponsored by the VOS was established to recognize outstanding abstracts submitted to the scientific program by residents. At least three awards will be conferred each year to provide funds (up to $1,500) to enable residents to attend and present their abstract at the annual meeting. To be eligible the applicant must be in a resident training program or within 2 years of completion of a formal residency program are eligible. 3. Submission Requirements: Clinical/Basic Science Studies or Case Reports

    Clinical/Basic Science Studies

PLEASE READ COMPLETELY BEFORE PREPARING AND SUBMITTING ABSTRACTS

Clinical science studies are defined as patient oriented research. This includes using clinical patients or their tissues to study mechanisms of disease, interventions, complications, or epidemiological research.

Basic science studies are defined as research into the mechanisms or treatment of disease using models (i.e. disease induction, biomechanical testing, etc).

    Case Report

Case Report is a single case or short series of cases where the epidemiology, disease mechanism, or novel treatment is described along with outcome.

    Submission Steps

    • Session - Choose the species most closely related to your submission.

    • Species - Select large animal, small animal, or exotic.

    • Title - Enter your abstract title, presentation preference (podium, poster, both). All those submitting for podium preference will also be considered for poster, but preference will be given to the presentation. Those who choose poster will not be considered for podium presentation.

    • Author - Add author affiliation and contact information.

    • Disclosure - Acknowledgement of any conflicts of interest, funding source.

    • Short Abstract - Enter abstract text no more than 250 words. This abstract is for publication in the VCOT program book.

    • Confirmation - View the submission materials as they were received and confirm that they are readable, and correctly formatted. You should receive a confirmation email message within 24 hours of submission.
  4. Short Abstract Headings: Clinical/Basic Science Studies

The following headings are required for submission of Clinical/Basic Science Studies short abstracts. Headings are not required for Case reports, but proprietary or conflict of interest statement is still required.

    • Introduction: Background on general topic or previous work; include statement of purpose of the study and hypothesis. This should convey the need, significance/impact of the work.

    • Materials and Methods: Briefly describe the methodology of research or technique used in this study. Methods should be appropriate to answer the hypothesis or problem that generated the work.

    • Results: Data should be presented in sufficient detail to support the conclusions. It is not acceptable to generalize or state, "results will be discussed".

    • Discussion/Conclusion: Include an interpretation of the results. Do not simply restate the results. Was the hypothesis/problem answered? Were limitations or additional problems identified? How can the information derived from this study, or technique, best be applied to further research or clinical situation? Provide relevance and/or innovation to the current body of knowledge.

Please note: A limited number of references are allowed, if necessary, in the long abstract.

Disclose any proprietary interest and identify financial support, either by direct funding (extramural or intramural) or materials. This MUST be provided in both the short and long abstracts for the abstracts to be considered complete.
